Undermanned Victoria Royals squad defeated by the visiting Prince George Cougars 4-1

An undermanned Victoria Royals (1-8) squad were defeated by the visiting Prince George Cougars 4-1 Saturday night. Prince George swept the 2 game Island set after a 5-1 victory one night earlier.

Prince George (4-3) has now won 4 straight versus Victoria, part of six consecutive against each other. They Royals have now lost 7 in a row.

With 9 injured players, the Royals introduced 3 newly acquired 19 year olds into the line up Saturday via trades, one in each position. Forward Caleb Willms from Medicine Hat, 6’6 defenseman Anson McMaster from the Winnipeg ice and netminder Campbell Arnold from the Spokane Chiefs.

Saturday the two clubs were tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes, but the Cougars added a single against the flow in the 2nd, before scoring the final two in the third, including an empty net.

Arnold who hails from Nanaimo, was named 2nd star with 30 saves, while overage netminder Taylor Gauthier earned the win with 28 stops.

Victoria was 1 for 3 on the power play, while not allowing Prince George a single man advantage.

Forward Carter Briltz scored the lone marker for the Royals, his first in the WHL for the 17 year old.

The six game set wraps up Tuesday and Wednesday in Prince George as Victoria embarks on a 4 game in 5 night BC Division road swing.
